Making a Difference

Health Care
In 1974, Project Help purchased some bare land 30 miles South East of Borel at a small village called Pierre Payen where work was begun in building a clinic. Health services were few and far between and as were health care workers. Our early medical workers, both doctors and nurses, were mostly rotated in from the U.S. We slowly trained and recruited qualified Haitian nurses and doctors and today our clinic is fully staffed with Haitians and one surgeon. In the late 1990's land was purchased across the street to build a new 26 bed surgical hospital which was dedicated in mid 2001. The hospital was constructed with a second unfinished wing for future expansion. It is hoped that other health services such as dental and eye clinics can use some of this space. Since the death of Dr. Binkley in Feb. 2010 we have been bringing specialized surgical teams to Pierre Payen, usually one week of every month. We continue to look for ways to broaden the types of health services provided as well as and enhance the quality of care. We hope to share some exciting news in health care later this year.
